November 6, 2008.. Digital Television Transition
Analog television sets receiving free TV using an antenna will not work after February 17, 2009.  Patrick Welch owner of Noobie.com talked about the new digital technology for HD TVs.  He discussed the pros and cons of this new TV format and discuss some antenna options for those not using cable or satellite. October 2, 2008.. Video Transfer & Computer Diagnostic Tool
Terry Kerby demonstrated two software package. "VideoReDo" is used to edit videos with emphasis on commercial deletion and produce a number of different output formats.  "The Ultimate Troubleshooter", aka TUT, is a PC Tuning &Troubleshooting software package that allows you to tune up your PC like the experts do thanks to it's extensive and detailed database of tasks. TUT is a very user friendly program for anyone from beginners to advanced users to use.

Sara Risely talked about the community benefits of the Ronald McDonald House.  It exists to provide a home-away-from-home for families with sick or injured children being treated at Indianapolis area hospitals, primarily Riley Hospital for Children.

Eloise Erickson from the IRS talked about e-Filing and the new tax laws for filing your 2007 tax returns. She will discussed some of the various options for filing your taxes electronically using software or online.  Eloise talked about the Economic Stimulus package that the government will mail to tax payers this year.

November 1, 2007..  Hewlett Packard
Fred Whatley from Hewlett Packard showed us the latest products from HP.  He showed products from computing to printing.  One product is a new printer with and industry first, 6-color scanning capability.  The printer also has the capabilities to scan slides and 35mm negatives, so you can convert all those old photos into digital images.  Also demonstrations on the latest in digital cameras, and portable photo printers.  Fred also highlighted the new HP Home Media server, how it integrates into your home, and with other products in the new "converged" home, how it will make our lives easier and more enjoyable. This was a great evening to see the latest in technology from HP.

Jason Oldham from Microsoft presentation MS Office 2007 to our club.  He demonstrated the changes for previous office products and talked about the advantages of their new product.

Also, the floor was open for nomination of the SSCC's 2008 officers.

September 6, 2007..  Buying & Selling on E-Bay
The Southside Computer club hosted Hope Hatfield from E-Bay;  teaching the ins & outs of selling & buying on E-bay. Got something to sell or have something in mind to buy? Linda gave informative hints on doing business on the net.  Hope, a Certified eBay trainer, is with Hatfield Consulting, Inc.

The Southside Computer club featured LINDA CARMODY  from the better business bureau . She spoke on computer scams & finish off with a session on Crazy Products . This was a very interesting, fun and informative evening.

Terry Kerby discussed firewalls and revealed some of the top firewalls available including some free versions. Here are just a few of the questions he answered;  What is a firewall?,  What are the different types of firewalls?,  Do I need a firewall?  Doesn't Windows OS already have a firewall?,  How do I use a firewall?, What can and can't a firewall protect?,  How does a firewall work?, Show me a working firewall.

Jason Oldham from Microsoft will gave us a look at their new upcoming Windows operating system, Vista.
The new computer OS will have several improvements, including better security features, more comprehensive search capabilities and a friendlier user interface.

Terry Kerby demonstrated a web creation program that allows novice to create a web site without knowing any coding.  This is a cool program and everyone in attendance got a free full version of the program for their own personal use.

Patrick Seldge from gave a very informative talk about how to trouble shoot problems with your PC.  He has been a PC repair technician and is very familiar with common problems he see in the repair shop.  The SouthSide Computer club wants to thank Patrick for sharing this wealth of information with us.

Hope Hatfield presented eBay tips & techniques.  Hope, a Certified eBay trainer, is with Hatfield Consulting, Inc.  She gave a very informative class on how to setup an eBay & Pay Pal account, buy, sell, and trade on ebay.  Thanks Hope for sharing this information with us.

September 1, 2005.. Microsoft Windows Vista
Chris Brown from Microsoft demonstrated Microsoft's next coming operating system, Vista (Longhorn is the corporate version).  He shows some of the cool new features like 3-D stacked windows and a very fast search function. He also addressed some of the new security features like Anti-Spyware.  He said the the new OS with the appropriate hardware will allow the system to boot in 3 (Yes 1,2,3) seconds. 

During the SIG Terry Kerby showed PicoBackup, a data backup program that can automatically locate some of your data like outlook express mail and windows address book.

Joe Rock special agent with the FBI presented internet security issues and how to help protect yourself from identity thief.  He also discussed how the FBI is structured and the different areas within the organization.

February 3, 2005.. Hard Drive Installation and Trouble Shooting
Paul Hagedorn discussed hard drive Trouble Shooting, Installation, Recovery and what to do if your hard drive stops working.
Jim Shireman demonstrated Microsoft's Encarta 2005 Reference Library at the SIG and gave away two copies of the software.

January 6, 2005..  Senior Promise
Senior Promise is an organization for people age 50 or older designed to provide special medical benefits, services and support to its members.  Jim Poole, manager, spokes about the program and its benefits.  Membership is $15/year or a lifetime membership is available.  Here are some of the benefits that Jim discussed: flash admission, free insurance counseling, personal account assistance, free telephone, TV discount, prescription assistance, lending library access, wellness program discounts, free hospital parking, area business discounts,

November 4, 2004.. Making a Photo Web Page
Terry Kerby discussed how to put your family photos on the web for anyone to view from their web browser.  He showed how to use a free program to create a slide show or display static photos to place on the web.  No need to send big photo files attachments with your email.  You can simply create your own web site.  Most of the internet service providers provide free web space with your account for this purpose and there are many free ones.

October 7, 2004.. Office Depot & Hewlett Packard
Al Rodriguez, manager of the new Office Depot on U.S. 31 South, and a representative from Hewlett Packard discussed the new line of HP Photo printers.  They talked about the current technology and how to match the photo paper to the printer for best results and longevity.  They demonstrated two of their printers by printing photos.  Wow ... the photos looked better than a professional prints and have over one hundred years life.

Bob Sanders talked about Intel  Pentium 4  hyper threading. What is it?  What are the differences in the Pentium 4 and the other processors? These questions and more were answered at the August meeting.

George Harding gave a very informative presentation to a well attended meeting.  George shared about thirty different tips and tricks in using Windows, MS Word and Excel. Carl Magna discussed Setting up your digital camera, Learning the limitations of your digital camera, Comparing a digital camera to a 35mm camera, Learning how to use the different settings on your digital camera, Taking great pictures within your camera's limitations, Transferring pictures to the computer, Cropping and sizing pictures, Adjusting the brightness, contrast and colors of your pictures, Adjusting the resolution for different uses of your pictures, Saving your pictures for future use, Different paper for different uses, Setting up your printer for best picture printing, Pictures were taken, adjusted and printed at the meeting.  Link to Carl's Presentation

March 4, 2004.. Banking Online
Bank One talked about the advantages of banking from your pc at home. It is quick, easy and usually free for this service. They demonstrated their software and talked about all the online options you have from the comfort of your home.  No more trips to the bank.

February 5, 2004.. Building a Supercomputer
Tom Blackburn talked about how to build a Hi-Tech, State-of-the-Art computer, complete with bells and whistles. He demoed one that he built just last month.  With the multitude of color lights incorporated inside his machine, it appeared to be something you might find in one of Tom Clancy's Sci-Fi novels. He pointed out the reasons you need a pc like his particularly for the ultimate gaming experience.  Did you know that some pc's actually have a tank of water inside with fish swimming around all lit up?

Terry will demonstrated three of Lavasoft's Ad and Spyware removal programs:
Ad-aware Standard, Ad-aware Plus, and Ad-aware Professional.
He showed why you want to use one of these programs and how to use them.

January 8, 2004..  Portable Document Format aka “PDF”
Most of us are familiar with file formats which end in the .pdf file extension and use the ever popular Adobe® Acrobat® Reader to read those files. For several years the only software available to convert documents to those .pdf files was a product from Adobe®. Now because patents have expired, anyone can  produce software which can convert many types of files into .pdf format. At this meeting Jim and Terry discussed some of the different new programs out there and saw demonstrations of three of the software packages. Two copies of Click2PDF software was given away at the meeting.

Chris Brown from Microsoft presented Microsoft's newest office suite.  Chris demoed the various programs while noting the new features in the suite. Microsoft was very generous in giving away 25 door prizes including copies of Office 2003.  Thanks Microsoft !!!!!

Back by popular demand Janet Prether returned to discussed additional features in Microsoft Word. She talk about some of the common usages plus many hidden useful tricks.
Also, George Harding demonstrated the new technology in satellite radio. Your favorite radio station without commercials, or program promos wherever you go.  This was a very interesting demo.

September 4, 2003.. Home Networking Demo
Terry, Jim and Bob showed how to connect a wired and wireless network to share internet connections, printers and scanners from all your pc's and PDAs?  Access your address book, financial data, photos, e-mail, and personal data stored on only one pc from your other computers or while sitting in your back yard? Security settings and issues were also discussed.

August 7, 2003.. Kelly Day from Creative Memories
Kelly talked about the  pitfalls of conventional storage of our precious photographs we have taken over the years and how to overcome them.  She showed us how to preserve these cherished memories in safe, meaningful scrapbook photo albums. Proper selection of photo paper and protective sheets are most important and were discussed at this meeting.
Thanks to Kelly and the representatives for Creative Memories for this very informative presentation.  No more yellow and discolored photos!

We covered card and board games, puzzles, sport games, strategy and first person shooters. She talked about some of the common usages plus many hidden useful tricks.  How can I insert special characters, such as dingbats and accented letters, in my document?  What do all those funny marks, like the dots between the words in my document, and the square bullets in the left margin, mean?  Where is the document that I created last week?  What are some of the most useful Word shortcuts? February 6, 2003.. October 3, 2002.. George Harding discusses and gives a demonstration of Microsoft's Xbox, the latest and greatest gaming platform. Microsoft has really done a great job on the Xbox, with the best graphics ever, a hard disk, a DVD drive and, soon, Internet online gaming! Think games are only for kids? Wait until you see what's available for adults!

Terry Kerby discuss why's and how's of creating your own cd's within windows.  He talked about the hardware and software required to make your own cd's.  His presentation included Click'N Burn Pro 2.0 Suite and Roxio's Easy CD Creator.  He also discussed the limited capabilities of the software already included in Windows XP.

August 1, 2002.. Leo, Mike, and Mitch our guest speakers from Midwest Internet (mw.net) gave a great panel discussion on security.  They discussed common security areas on home computers including home network security, and how you can fix them.  Morris Plummer also talked about a $20 Mail Station that is a great alternative to E-Mailing for people who, either travel a lot or for people who are not interested in Computers but, still want to e-mail friends and relatives.

July 11, 2002.. Jim Shireman and Terry Kerby presented a two part series about hard drives.  Jim discussed the basics of "Understanding your Hard Drive" and Terry talked about "Hard drive analysis including use of Drive Image, Partition Magic, and Multiple Operating Systems”.

Auri Rahimzadeh a Senior Consultant at Haverstick Consulting and President of the Indianapolis Computer Society presented "Home Networking".  He discussed the reasons to use networking in the home and talked about the different networking methods available today and in the near future.  Hope you did not miss this one .... it was very informative.

May 2, 2002.. Rob Glass Vice President of Technology with Port-To-Port Consulting presented WINDOWS XP.     
He discussed new features in Windows XP and reasons why you may want to upgrade to Microsoft's newest and possibly their best operating system to date.

April 4, 2002... Jim Shireman talked about the Compaq IPAQ PDA.  He discussed the benefits and reasons for owning a PDA and gave a demonstration of some of the available programs.  Click here for his presentation.

March 7, 2002... Terry Kerby discussed Outlook Express e-mail configurations, group mailing, spam blocking and message rules.  Tom Blackburn talked about newsgroups:  what are they, why use them, how to use them .....        Click here for Outlook Express notes.

February 7, 2002... Terry Kerby showed a program called RegCleaner that allows you to safely clean your Registry which can make your system boot faster and sometimes fix problems when you're trying to install a program. Marc Snell showed some Windows basic tips and took questions from the audience.

January 3, 2002... Jim Shireman talked about the process of setting up a DSL line and how you could share a DSL or Cable connection among different computers.

December 6, 2001... Our annual Christmas party and Q&A session. Many questions were answered and many door prizes were won.

November 1, 2001... Dan Nielsen from the FBI discussed Cybercrime and how to prevent becoming a victim. It was a very interesting discussion.

September 6, 2001... Chris Bailey from Hewlett-Packard discussed the different types of scanners on the market and what you should look for when purchasing a scanner.

August 2, 2001... Microsoft had an interesting presentation on Office XP and showed some of their other products like the Pocket PC and their new Train Simulator game. 

July 5, 2001...       Bob Sanborn talked to the group about home networking. He discussed the different networking options and the pros and cons of each option.

April 5, 2001...       Bob Carpenter showed Syntrillium Software's CoolEdit 2000. This program allows you to edit your music to get rid of annoying pops and clicks or just create your own music mixes.

March 1, 2001...        Terry Kerby showed us how to create a simple photo web site so you can share photos with far-away family members or just people that you don't see in person that often.

February 1, 2001...    Roberts Pro Photographic discussed digital cameras and what to look for when buying a digital camera. Sample pictures were printed out to show how sharp digital camera output could be.

January 4, 2001... Carl Magna demoed Pagemaker 6.5 and Marc Snell showed the current state of Linux.

December 7, 2000... Our annual Christmas party and Q&A session. Many questions were answered and many door prizes were won.

November 2, 2000... Lance from Interconnect continued his discussion of DSL and how it differs from cable modem access. Steve Riddle had a short discussion about Windows Me and why it isn't the upgrade for most people.

August 3, 2000...  Steve McCoy from Anthem discussed how to keep your home PC safe and secure. This was one we hope you did not miss.

July 6, 2000...    Terry Kerby finished his PC Maintenance by explaining how to backup your critical data that you've created. The program he used was Second Copy 2000.

June 1, 2000... Terry Kerby talked about PC Maintenance as it related to software.

March 2, 2000... Steve Riddle showed Microsoft's Windows2000. He showed how Microsoft's new operating system is geared towards businesses. He also answered general Windows questions from the membership.

February 3, 2000... George Harding showed the GoBack and Second Chance products. Both of these products allow you to go back to previous versions of your files. George showed how you could retrieve a file that was mistakenly deleted or copied over.
